In Hindu tradition, the Ekadashi fast holds a highly revered place. Generally, there are 24 Ekadashis in a year. However, the Ekadashi that occurs during the Adhika Masa (extra lunar month / Purushottama Masa), which comes approximately once every three years, is known as "Padmini Ekadashi" or "Kamala Ekadashi."
This Ekadashi, observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) of Adhika Masa, is considered extremely sacred. On this day, devotees worship Lord Mahavishnu along with Goddess Lakshmi with deep devotion and reverence. Scriptures state that fasting, chanting, and charitable acts performed on Padmini Ekadashi grant immense spiritual merit beyond that of other Ekadashis.
There is an important mythological story associated with this Ekadashi. It is believed that the powerful king Kartaviryarjuna was born as a result of this sacred observance. A childless king named Kritavirya and his wife Padmini performed severe penance to be blessed with children. Pleased with their devotion, Goddess Anasuya advised Padmini to observe the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi occurring during Adhika Masa. Padmini Devi performed the vrata with complete faith and dedication.
Lord Mahavishnu appeared before her and granted a boon that the Ekadashi would be known by her name as "Padmini Ekadashi." Furthermore, she was blessed with a son, Kartaviryarjuna, who became powerful enough to conquer the three worlds and could be defeated only by Lord Parashurama.
On Padmini Ekadashi, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a sacred bath, and begin the worship of Lord Vishnu. They observe fasting throughout the day, recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya," and remain awake in devotion. By following the prescribed rules from Dashami night itself and breaking the fast only after offering food and clothes to Brahmins or the needy on Dwadashi, devotees complete the observance. It is believed that this vrata removes sins from previous births, brings fame, blessings of children, and relief from financial difficulties. Worshiping the Lord on this sacred day is also believed to help one progress toward the path of liberation (Moksha).
This year (2026), the Padmini Ekadashi fasting vrata should be observed on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
According to the Hindu Panchangam, the complete details of this Ekadashi are as follows.
