వైకుంఠ చతుర్ధశి రోజున శ్రీమహావిష్ణువు వైకుంఠాన్ని వదలి వారణాసి వెళ్ళి పరమశివుడిని పూజించినట్లు కథనం. అందువలన ఈరోజున అందరూ శివాలయాలకు వెళ్ళి దీపం వెలిగించాలి. ఇలా ఆచరించిన వారికి శివ కేశవుల - నరనారాయణుల అనుగ్రహం వెంటనే కలుగుతుందని భక్తుల విశ్వాసం.
